A man returned to his home town after it away and discovers a severed human ear in a field. Not satisfied with the police ahead, he and the police detective daughter implementing their own investigation. In the early moments of "Blue Velvet" we see images idealized small town - blooming red roses and white immaculate Picketing fences - accompanied by the gentle sounds of Bobby Vinton pop melody, the film its title. If you have something unsettling feeling to this perfection, this is only appropriate. "Blue Velvet" is a David Lynch film, you see, and it will not be long before a clean-cut college students in one ear rotting in an open field.
Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) is the boy, the ear, and Sandy Williams (Laura Dern) is the blonde daughter of a policeman, Jeffrey helps if he decides to discover the truth about his disturbing discovery. Sandy and Jeffrey link ear to night club singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) and later, a disturbed man named Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper).
"I do not know whether you are a detective or a pervert," says Jeffrey Sandy, if it decides to sneak into Dorothy's apartment. As Jeffrey is sexually entangled with Dorothy, we can only cast similar doubt.
It is true that "Blue Velvet" 's dark secrets have the power to repulse. Voyeurism, rape, torture, murder and all are key to the plot. Nevertheless, the film also spellbinding in its beauty. Strong colors and ominous shade beautiful contrast - call it Technicolor noir - and the film is full of unforgettable images. Moments large and small, from MacLachlan plays with a child birthday hat to Dean Stockwell's show-stopping lip-synch of Roy Orbison's "Dreams", as a ghost than anything you see in the films anywhere.
The acting is top-notch. MacLachlan is exactly the right thing as a lost innocent Jeffrey, Hopper and shreds the screen as its counterpoint spoiled Frank. Rossellini's performance as Dorothy is devastating and extremely brave: This is their defining moment as an actress.
"Blue Velvet" is perhaps the quintesstential David Lynch film. His strange sense of humour and beautiful gift for creating stunning images are on display visible, and the film shows Lynch's contradictory impulses in the direction of unbridled nastiness and AW-shucks sweetness like no other. After all these years, "Blue Velvet" is still a shocker, and to decide how one feels about this is still a challenge. It is a movie, and then reconsidered, visited and gave the kind of film will never fade away. For serious cinephiles, then, "Blue Velvet" is a film to be cherished.
