perspective is a good thing. Since the publication of "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace", claims and counter claims, as it Episode II and III are eventuate has taken out of the spotlight "original" Star Wars movies, so that they are part of a coherent whole, instead of the separation of older and new films in separate trilogies. What the new films have made is to be placed new perspectives of the earlier films. This new perspective allows us to appreciate what has often been seen as the weakest of the original trilogy: The Return of the Jedi. Often derided for his overly "cute" factor, ROTJ is in some ways as strong as the original and only slightly less impressive than the nearly perfect "The Empire Strikes Back". Because the "cute" element of ROTJ, the Ewoks, it remains a weak link in the entire series. Did George Lucas the furry midgets in the film only to the merchandising possibilities are there? Only he can answer this question.
This cute factor aside, the film is a brilliant circle and the development of the saga. Following the conclusion of "The Empire Strikes Back", Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) follows the Rebel Alliance Tatooine friends, his home planet, to the rescue of Han Solo (Harrison Ford), the space pirate hero turned rebel, was captured of Jabba the Hutt for overdue debts.
Skywalker is a changed man since leaving Tatooine with Ben "Obi Wan" Kenobi (Alec Guinness) to fight the evil empire. Now all swathed in black, Luke's discovery of its origin have left him confused and torn. His psychological make is not as strong as its appearance would suggest. While he could goal, always Rebel his friends, he yearns for another opportunity to become the evil Darth Vader again, despite his unassuredness whether he might destroy or turn on the dark side and become a member in the imperial Vader Page.
Early on Tatooine scenes are impressive, from Jabba stronghold, on his floating palace and the "almighty Sarlac" - a intenstine life in the sand. Lucas' CGI extensions to the film in 1997 really a deterioration of the overall effect of the Sarlac, so that it fake and exaggerated.
The fight scene on Tatooine is excellent, and is one of the most memorable of the saga. Luke almost singlehandedly anihiliates Jabba and his cronies, demonstrates his skills as a Jedi is now almost complete.
If Luke returns to Degobah system to visit the ailing Yoda a second time, the audience is let down by Yoda's distinct lack of screentime. No doubt the star of "The Empire Strikes Back", Yoda, everything is deleted, but from the history, as the progression of Luke's fate played out on the screen.
ROTJ is really Luke's film, perhaps even more so than the original. His journey, the film, as he moves closer to its confrontation with Darth Vader and his fate. The other characters Rebel certainly work in his shadow. The romance between Read (Carrie Fisher) and solo is everything, but not, unlike in "Empire". In fact, only reading's character is in ROTJ, Solo's character seems to fade as the facets of his personality have become familiar in the first two films.
Their roles are consigned to working with the rebels to destroy an all new Death Star that is nearing completion. This time the emperor himself is monitoring the final phase of construction. The Empire will crush the rebellion once and for all, while the emperor himself regulations, which are now powerful Skywalker on his side to work alongside (or is replaced?) Darth Vader. The emperor is a different kind of evil for this film, less clever as Governor Tarkin (Peter Cushing) of "Star Wars", more psychologically deep dark than anything else. Glossy played by Ian McDiarmid, the emperor is just one of those signs that you love to hate.
All other players are well entrenched in their roles. Hamill surprises more than wisened Luke, his character so that the progression of whiny teenagers, students impatiently for enlightened warriors one of the few real character developments of the series. Ford has the task of waring thin, like all his charm and charisma were in the first two films - he was the real star of the first film. Fisher's reading is more of a support, at least unti the end of the film is, where they are things about herself, she was never sure about ... Add as favorites such as Alec Guinness as Kenobi, Yoda and Chewbacca the lovable, C-3PO and R2D2 and the series resembles a family more than a cast.
Despite the film corny forest battle with the Ewoks and the Empire, it ends well and includes a three-way fight sequence: on Endor, in space and on the Death Star, each with very impressive Special Effects. The music, as always, is brilliant and perfectly captures the mood in each case. Just as the "Blue Danube" worked perfectly for "2001: A Space Odyssey", John Williams' score is as much a part of "Star Wars" Folklore as light sabers and the Force.
the end Lucas left open for interpretation, meaning it would have more episodes. Indeed, sci-fi fans have their own versions of episodes VII, VIII and IX in their heads again and again. ROTJ do so when an opportunity, and cute furry animals apart is a good conclusion of the series.
If all six episodes to see, this story could well be the best ever. Is it already? The addition of Episode I changed the landscape of the series. This is the reason why "Return of the Jedi" is now in a different light and receives a whole new appreciation for almost 20 years after its release.
