In October 1962, U-2 surveillance photos show that the Soviet Union in the process of placing nuclear weapons in Cuba. These weapons have the ability to wipe out most of the eastern and southern United States in just a few minutes, when they are active. President John F. Kennedy and his advisers have to deal with an action plan against the Soviets. Kennedy is determined to show that he is strong enough to face the threat, and the Pentagon advises U.S. military strikes against Cuba that could lead the way to another U.S. invasion of the island. However, Kennedy is reluctant to follow through because a U.S. invasion could lead to the Soviets to beat in Europe. A nuclear showdown seems to be almost inevitable. Can it be prevented?
The fact that JFK's assassination, and especially the very mysterious circumstances around him, has become a very different historical niche is carved around him. However, the majority of written tests related to his murder. The man presidency, just when it was full of exciting events and both in literature and film, they remain under-frustrating. What is the reason why "Thirteen Days" is such a treat.
What the film essentially does is to offer us a clear part-fictional, but quite true to the events of Thirteen Days the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. It is a fascinating close-up on a fascinating man who might have been a truly great president if he had gotten a real chance. Of course, the cinematic portrayal of JFK can only be a little too sympathetic, and the treatment of the military exaggerated a bit hard, and the importance of Kenny O'Donnell, played by Kevin Costner, is probably exaggerated, but these are minor quibbles. What this film really is, show us how complex and multifaceted was the problem of Russian nuclear missiles installed in Cuba. Not only did the President to face the dim and distant danger of a faceless bureaucracy Russian, he had to deal with the diverse and contradictory options constantly extended to him, the dangers caused by certain special interests in military and intelligence and the popular opinion of the American people. The impact of any number of different courses of action were almost unthinkable. Tilt the hands seemingly in the U.S. for a place that we say in Cuba, would further destabilize danger zone, such as Berlin. Despite the fact that we all know how the events played at the end, it can not be denied that this film keeps adding to the tensions constantly, sometimes from letting a little, and then stacking a lot more. It's a wonderful presentation.
its core, but the film is an intelligent study on the ultimately debilitating effects of power, and the stark horror of mutual destruction made possible by the use of nuclear power plants. The discovery of nuclear fission reactions has forever changed the face of warfare, there is now an ultimate solution so terrible it is almost beyond contemplation. In the comparatively safer times in which we now live, it is easy to forget as possible, perhaps even likely, the threat of nuclear war. America was then, and now remains the most powerful nation on earth, but one false move would have ended all, and at the expense of millions of innocent human life. Given the weight of the decisions which could cost as much must have been a terrible burden on Kennedy, and if nothing else, we should thank our lucky stars that he did not buckle under the manifold pressure on him. This film is a tribute to hotheadedness above ground, on peace and war. We should not forget the lessons that time, to mediate, and if this is a way to remember, then everyone should see it.
