If a pearl with a sinister reputation for the accident caused to its owners was stolen from a museum by a master criminal proceedings for Sherlock Holmes' show-boating, he is naturally obliged to find it. Soon he meets a series of brutal killings, seemed to have been committed by a malicious Man Mountain only known as the Creeper. Now, Holmes must deal with the seemingly overwhelming threat posed by this man and his boss, in order to retrieve the pearl.

Although "The Pearl of Death" in the first place remains a mystery thriller, the film only bathes in a real horror atmosphere and that is all thanks to the introduction of its spooky villain in the form of "The Creeper". This impressive figure is usually not from the screen or in the shadows, but his presence alone makes "The Pearl of Death" worrying all the Sherlock Holmes films. The Creeper, played by Rondo Hatton, suffered from the incurable disease acromegaly, plays a merciless killer, always kills its victims in the same way, namely by breaking their backs. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson cross his path while trying to return a stolen pearl with a great historical (and financial) value. Holmes does what he can to return the Pearl because he was responsible for the loss, while pointing out the security weaknesses of the British Museum. Roy William Neill has a different job classy directed the screenplay based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story "The Six Napoleons". The dialogues are exceptionally well written and wonderfully rattled off by the large cast. There are less obscure locations in this tranche, but against that there is a large collection of imaginative and exciting panels booby traps. As usual, the character of Dr. Watson and Scotland Yard Inspector Lestrade the film with a welcome comic relief.
