After the success cleaning up Dodge City, Wyatt Earp moved to Tombstone, Arizona, and wishes to Get Rich in oblivion. He meets his brothers there, as well as his old friend Doc Holliday. A gang of outlaws, called the Cowboys are problems in the region with various acts of random violence, and inevitably come into confrontation with the Earps and Holliday, which leads to a shoot-out in the OK Corral.
An entry in the late the western genre, if not too many were made, this is one of those re-Watchable mini-epics, with strong entertainment value. It starts with a bang, an intense shoot-out after some historical footage supposedly tells the story of actor Mitchum. We are introduced to the Cowboys, this era's version of the Mafia, led by the charismatic Curly Bill (Boothe). These first few minutes entnerven and surprise the audience immediately: We are also introduced to the psychotic GUNSLINGER, Ringo (Biehn), but he has shown how dangerous the group until after the Shoot-Out, a sleight of the filmmakers -- they made him look sympathetic in these early moments while everyone is blasting away and he just stands there looking stunned and effort. Only then can we see he'sa deadly deception of the damned - it's a powerful beginning.
It is amazing how well this film turned out, taking into account all the rumors of a troubled history. Credit must be given to director Cosmatos and the players. It is a fairly large cast, with many speaking roles, and everyone seems to have at least a good moment in history. Then there's Kilmer as doc is a good one, large or in every scene he is in - this is easily Kilmer's best role. Doc is already ill, as the film begins, but it leads to stay in the game until the end, more dangerous than every 2 cowboys with supernatural Spirit & Sardonic wit to everyone and distracted from the fact that he is almost a walking ghost. Russell is simply super-solid as Wyatt, he conveys a strong, developed from unknown sources (whereas Doc pulls off), standing high, when other tough guys quake in the knees. These two are an outstanding team, it is not the usual buddy stuff of most pictures. All supported the occupation is in order, including Elliott and Paxton as Wyatt's brothers, but there are some moments, too obvious. Earp's on - off relationship with the actress (Delany) has its ups and downs, there's not much room for subtlety as Earp woman seems pretty angry about Delany as another strike their confused expressions. Also due to the large number of characters, some of their stories have a strong feeling cut off (Priestley's, for example). The Vista-Director's Cut DVD special edition has some restored footage to improve this problem. The better are the scenes confrontations between the men, the threats swing high & low, and the sheer tension observed Russell slap an overweight Billy Bob Thornton silly.
And we have the villains, ah yes, the villains. I have already mentioned, a few of them - other than long-Ike Clanton in a wonderfully goofy, hammy yet mesmerizing performance. The last 3rd the film, I was like, he would - please someone - Earp, Holliday, anyone! -- Headline of the bastard off! Ike is one of the great unsung villains of movie history, an homage to Lang's abilities. The conflict in this real life story was based on the idea that there are no real villains. It was a matter of the group had the rights on the basis of gun power and political ambition. In other words, the Earps were only a political power play in the view of some, and there was hardly any difference between them and the Cowboys. But this film wastes no time in setting up Wyatt and his brothers as the decent side of the coin, and if you have characters like Ike, there is no danger of the site are the bad guys. Oh yeah, there are other films such as the Lancaster - Douglas opus of 1957. But the gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone "was only a set piece of many.
